I can hear you telling me to turn around
- I feel like we don’t talk enough about how important Jester is to Fjord and his story.
- He might not have been locked inside a room or in an asylum but I think it’s safe to say that Fjord had a very isolated life. Scorned, bullied, distrusted.
- Even with Vandran and his crew, we haven’t gotten any indication that he had a lot of close relationships other than that with his mentor and father figure.
- And then that life that he had worked so hard to build for himself, what little acceptance and belonging he had carved for himself in this world, what little hope he held, was all stripped away from him in an instant.
- He could have gone dark right there, been driven mad with anger and mourning and revenge.
- And then he met this girl.
- This girl who agrees to travel with him just because he asks, without thinking it twice or doubting him at all.
- And Fjord, who had to fight his whole life to be respected, to be considered worthy, to earn his place through hard work to prove himself…
- He finds this girl who repeatedly goes out of her way to help him in his goals, without ever asking for anything in return.
- Sure, she flirts and makes him blush and stumble and she brings trouble everywhere she goes
- But she listens to him intently, she keeps his secrers without questioning his motives, she makes him laugh.
- Gods, she makes him laugh and want to goof around like he never did as a kid.
- And the world should feel dark and empty and terrifying.. But it’s instead filled with light and color and magic.
- And this new life brings new things too. It brings the Mighty Nein, friends and family like he never had before. It brings power he never even dreamed of to keep himself and his friends safe. It brings adventure and excitement beyond his wildest dreams.
- And from the start Jester has been, to him, connected with this new wonderful life.
- It’s only months after traveling together, after fighting side to side, after going through hell together… That he starts to see the heavy sadness hidden behind her cheerful smile.
- And Fjord wants to help. He wants to fix it. He wants to return some of the help that has been given to him without asking anything other than companionship in return.
- But he can’t.
- He is being pulled in by the turmoil of his past and the darkness of his present. He is drowning under the pressure, struggling to stay on his path.
- And Jester is still there, like a lighthouse in a storm, calling him back, desperately trying to guide him back to who he is.
- But the water is treacherous and keeps pulling him away, further away, and her light becomes distant, and smaller, and weaker.
- And he might lose it out of sight.
- Or it might get snuffed out completely by something, by sadness, by fear, by himself.
- Fjord is just getting hit by the realization that he might lose the one light that kept him anchored when he could’ve drifted away into pain and darkness. He might lose his first real friend. He might lose the one person other than Vandran who marked a turn in his life and brought true happiness to it.
- And that’s a pretty big deal.
